Storage buildings
8 tips to keep the temperature stable in your storage building
8 min reading time

You have decided to buy a self-build storage building. The question now is, should you consider the season in which you will build the storage building when ordering it? A logical question since the storage building is built outside. We can reassure you, a storage building can be built in any season, even in winter. Each season has its advantages and disadvantages. In this blog, you will read more about them. If you have a preference for a particular season, you can take this into account in your planning.
Spring
In our opinion, spring is the best season to build a storage building. The ground is free of snow and thawed. The temperatures become pleasant again and will remain so for the foreseeable future. However, you need to prepare your ground beforehand. In spring, there is a higher demand for excavators because many people are working on, for example, their gardens. If you are having a concrete foundation poured, you will need to excavate the ground partially. After pouring the concrete, it needs to cure for 1 to 2 weeks before the storage building can be installed. Take this into account in your planning.
Summer
Summer is an ideal season for any outdoor activity, including building a storage building. However, it can get so hot that materials expand, and working in the middle of the day is not advisable. Another disadvantage of summer is that if you want to hire a assembly team, they are often busier during the summer. So make sure to book an assembly team in advance so they can assemble the storage building for you as soon as it is delivered.
Autumn
Autumn can also be a good season to build your storage building. It's not too hot or too cold, and the ground is not frozen. However, autumn is when most of the rain falls in the Netherlands, according to Weeronline. A construction site that is so muddy that trucks or cherry pickers cannot access it can cause problems. But, as Weeronline also tells us, it is dry more than 92% of the time in the Netherlands. Probably more than you thought. Assembly teams are often still very busy in autumn because many customers want their storage storage buildings ready for winter.
Winter
We often receive questions from customers about whether they can build their shed in winter. Our answer: 'yes, you can'. There are often the following misconceptions:
The weather can lead to delays in work. Unfortunately, you can't control this. However, assembly teams often have less work in winter, so the waiting time is usually shorter.
Perhaps based on the above information, you have a preference for a certain season in which to build your building. In that case, good planning is essential. For this, take the following three steps:

Have you thought about how you want to pay for the storage building? We realize that purchasing a storage building can be a significant investment, especially for starting entrepreneurs. That's why we offer entrepreneurs the opportunity to lease a storage building from €2,500. For a fixed monthly amount, you have access to the storage building without having to pay the full investment at once. In this blog, you can read more about what leasing is and how it works at Kroftman.
You would like to place a storage building on your own land. But can you do this without applying for an environmental permit, previously known as a building permit? An important question if you want to build a storage building. You can read more about this in this blog. Because this concerns laws and regulations and every situation is different, it is wise to gather information yourself. You can quickly check whether an environmental permit is required at the environmental desk. If you are indeed allowed to build the storage building without a permit, you do not need an environmental permit. Always check the zoning plan of your municipality. Especially in industrial areas, more is often allowed than with the standard national rules.
You can apply for the environmental permit with an application form from your municipality. This can be done digitally or in writing. You can also apply directly via www.omgevingsloket.nl. In some municipalities, you can have your plans checked in advance to see if they are feasible. The application may not yet have been submitted. Once the application has been submitted, no changes can be made. However, additional attachments can still be added. In the application, you must indicate what your (re)building plans are. You must explain this with the construction drawings and structural calculations of, for example, your newly built storage building. At Kroftman, you will receive these for free.
In your planning, keep in mind that the municipality has a maximum of eight weeks to approve or reject an environmental permit, and they can extend this period by six weeks. Make sure you are well prepared and submit the documents on time. Once you have received confirmation that your environmental application has been approved, you can order the storage building. Because you have to take into account a delivery time of 6-14 weeks, we advise you to order it immediately after receiving your decision.

Your environmental permit is in, and you have ordered your storage building. During the weeks in which the storage building is being produced, you can prepare the construction site. You can assemble your storage building yourself or hire a company for this. If you outsource the assembly, make sure to arrange this well in advance to avoid delays. Given the shortage of technical personnel, there are often waiting times. Whether you choose self-assembly or outsourcing, make sure your construction site has the following facilities:
The moment has arrived, your storage building has arrived at your location. You will receive a detailed assembly manual with your self-build storage building, including many detailed drawings. The assembly time of a storage building is listed on our website. If you go to the storage building of your choice, you will see the tab 'specifications'. Here you will find under the heading 'average assembly time with DIY assembly with 4 people' in how many days the storage building is fully assembled. The two biggest challenges in assembling a self-build storage building are ensuring a level ground and assembling the overhead door. In principle, every season is suitable for building a storage building. If you have a preference, take into account the (estimated) lead time below. You can then estimate for yourself when to take which step to be able to build in the season you want. In the example below, we assume 8 weeks for the environmental permit and 12 weeks for the storage building delivery time.
You can see that the entire procedure takes almost half a year. If you want to build your storage building in April, you will need to apply for an environmental permit in early November. At least, if everything goes as estimated. Perhaps you will receive the environmental permit within 4 weeks, or the storage building delivery time has increased to 16 weeks. That's annoying, but you now know that you can build your storage building in any season.
