You've bought a storage building because you need space to store things. Now that you have this space, have you thought about how to best organize the storage building? According to research by philosopher Dr. Eric Abrahamson, professor and author of the book "A Perfect Mess," over 65% of people describe themselves as 'not so tidy.' Nothing to be ashamed of. Do you want to make a fresh start in this storage building and keep things tidy and organized? In this blog, Kroftman provides you with some tips on how to efficiently organize your storage building.

Tip 1: Use shelving units in your storage building

There is a wide range of shelving units available for purchase, in various designs and sizes. If you look online, you will come across many suppliers. There are heavy-duty shelving units, pallet racks, boltless shelving, tire racks, cantilever racks, and more. Depending on what you want to store, choose the shelving unit that suits you. You can utilize the height of the storage building and have the shelves run up to just below the roof. However, ensure that the shelving units are self-supporting elements and are not attached to the walls of the storage building. Especially with uninsulated cladding, you only have half a millimeter to screw into. This won't provide much strength to the shelves and you'll immediately see a dent on the outside of the cladding. We also advise against it with thicker insulated cladding. Shelving units have mass and are an additional load on the structure of the storage building. What could work is screwing the shelves to the foundation.

Tip 2: Create convenient storage spaces in your storage building for your tools

You want to start a project but can't find your tools. It's quite annoying to waste your valuable time searching for your tools. You can prevent this by creating a convenient storage space in your storage building for your tools, screws, etc. For example, by using magnetic tool holders or a perforated wall. There are many tool hanging systems available online. Now it's just a matter of consistently storing your items there.

Tip 3: Install a workbench in your storage building

Our storage buildings are designed for storage. However, it can be very practical to install a workbench or large table in your storage building. This can be useful for labeling, checking, packing, unpacking, etc. If you're unsure if you have the space for this, you can outline the areas where the shelves and workbench will be placed with tape on the floor. You'll quickly see how much space this takes up in the storage building and whether you can still move around easily. With or without a forklift, depending on what applies to you.

Tip 4: Use hooks in your storage building to hang things

Hooks are very useful for hanging (garden) hoses, ropes, and the like. It prevents them from getting tangled, and you can access them quickly. Hooks mounted to our storage building cannot bear much weight. We advise against screwing into our cladding. You could attach the hooks with mounting glue.

Points to consider when setting up your Kroftman storage building
For all the above tips, preferably never screw anything directly to the storage building. The cladding is not suitable for this, and if you attach something heavy to the storage building, it's an additional load on the structure of the storage building. It's not designed for this. What you can do is use mounting glue to attach lighter items to the storage building, such as tool hanging systems and hooks. However, be sure not to overload them with the items you hang on them. There are a few more points to consider when setting up a Kroftman storage building:

  • Preferably, do not store items directly against the wall or roof cladding. Especially in uninsulated storage buildings, you want to create space along the walls and roof for ventilation.
  • Preferably, do not place items directly on the floor of the storage building. The floor can be damp, and it's also better for ventilation if air can flow along. You can place a pallet underneath the items.
  • Do not install a mezzanine floor in the warehouse attached to the columns of the warehouse. The structure is not designed for this. What could potentially work is creating a 'mezzanine' or intermediate floor in the warehouse as a standalone element.

Take another critical look at your layout
You have your layout ready. Then it's good to ask yourself the following questions about this layout:

  • Do you have space to move freely (or drive if applicable) in the storage building without bumping into things?
  • Do you find what you need quickly and can you easily access it?
  • Have you created enough storage space, also with an eye on the future?

Ultimately, the goal is to be able to store all your items well and quickly find them when needed in a tidy and practical storage building.

We hope we've given you some ideas. If you've always been a messy person, don't expect that to be solved with a good layout of your storage building. On the other hand, Dr. Eric Abrahamson's research also showed that messy people are happier. Not surprising, of course, because those who are constantly panicking about cleaning enjoy the other little things in life much less. We hope you will enjoy using your new storage building!
