Did you know that almost 40% of entrepreneurs in the Netherlands experience burglary at some point? According to CBS figures, the number of thefts and burglaries at businesses has decreased over the past 10 years. However, every day, 40 entrepreneurs are still victims of theft and burglary. It's very unpleasant to experience. It's your storage building and your belongings stored in it. It's understandable that you want to protect your belongings against burglary and theft. In this blog, you'll read more about how our storage buildings can be secured, the burglary risk of a self-build storage building, and tips for burglary prevention in your storage building.
Our storage buildings do not have windows in the facades, although we plan to offer this option soon. Daylight enters only through a number of transparent roof panels. Windows are often used by burglars to gain access to a building. Because there are no windows in the facades of our storage buildings, this burglary risk is eliminated. Another way is by forcing the doors. Our self-build storage buildings have three different types of doors, each with its own locking mechanism:
Walk-in doors
Each walk-in door is equipped with a mortise lock with one bit key. The mortise lock and the fittings are prepared for a cylinder lock (see picture 1). This is not included and can be installed by you. Key groupings are also possible. Furthermore, each walk-in door is equipped with sturdy hinges according to the NEN certification for locks and fittings, the EN1935. Our doors come standard with thief claws (see picture 2). Outward-opening doors are vulnerable to burglary. A burglar can easily lift them out of the frame by tapping out the hinge pins. This problem is solved with thief claws.

Roll-up doors
Our roll-up doors are equipped with a sliding latch to which you can easily attach a padlock yourself. The padlock is not included.
Overhead doors
these can be secured by means of a sliding latch on the inside. This allows a padlock to be inserted. This is not included.

So our storage buildings can be completely locked.
We sell self-build storage buildings. We supply all parts for the storage building separately. You then assemble these parts yourself. Our storage buildings are essentially a self-build kit designed to be assembled quickly and easily. One of the last steps to assemble the self-build storage building is to screw the sheet material onto the storage building frame. This sheet material can also be unscrewed. In fact, the entire storage building can be disassembled. This means that unauthorized persons can also unscrew sheet material and gain access to the storage building. This cannot be prevented with a self-build storage building. Read below for more information on preventive measures you can take to minimize burglary and theft.
In addition to installing locks, there are other things you can do to prevent burglary. Below are some tips from insurer Allianz and others.
Do not provide opportunities for theft
About 80% to 90% of all burglaries are committed by opportunistic thieves. They mainly look for items that are easy to sell. Such a thief takes advantage of the opportunity, the moment, or the chance. Burglary prevention starts with paying attention to whether you are providing that opportunity. Always lock doors, even if you are only away for a short time, and leave as few items outside as possible.
Create the impression that someone is present
A simple measure that can be effective is to give the impression that someone is present in the storage building, for example by leaving lights on. This can already deter thieves because they do not want to take the risk of encountering someone. Lighting is also practical when you install a security camera. The light makes the camera footage clearer. Many modern security cameras have infrared, but these models can be expensive. Therefore, turning on the light is already a good step towards better image material.
Limit access for unauthorized persons
A fence with a lockable gate and possibly barriers are perfect for restricting access for unauthorized persons. This prevents a van or car from coming close to your storage building quickly.

Make your doors burglary-resistant
The overhead door, which cannot be opened from the outside, is the most burglary-resistant door. You can add extra locks and fittings to the walk-in door and the roll-up door according to the Police Hallmark Security Guidelines. Your insurance may have special requirements for the locks. Always check before purchasing a lock. The criterion from the Police Hallmark is that burglars must force the door for at least 3 minutes to open it. The advice is to equip doors that open outwards with thief claws or security hinges. These are standard on our walk-in doors in accordance with the NEN standard EN1935.
Install security cameras
You can install security cameras that allow you to see what is happening at the storage building on your smartphone. This allows a private alarm center or police to also view in the event of a report. An outdoor camera also has a deterrent effect.
Install an alarm system
If you have valuable items stored in the storage building, you can have an alarm system (with sound signals or camera surveillance) installed. You can connect the alarm system to a private alarm center. You will be called immediately in case of (attempted) burglary. The best preventive measures to take depend on the situation. You can seek advice from a recognized security company.
Always report burglary
If your storage building is burgled, always report it to the police. This is also necessary for insurance purposes. This can also be done online.
Insure your storage building and your inventory
By following the prevention tips, you significantly reduce the risk of burglary. Unfortunately, this is not a guarantee. Therefore, always make sure that both your storage building and your goods, inventory, and business assets are well insured. Your insurance advisor can advise you on this.
Advice from a recognized security company
We hope you never experience a burglary in your storage building. By applying the preventive tips above, you can reduce the risk, but it does not provide a guarantee. If you want customized advice, please request this from a recognized security company. Security companies use a tool (VRKI 2.0) to determine the burglary risk of commercial properties. Based on that risk, they determine which measures can be taken to prevent burglary.
