The energy transition is gaining momentum. The electricity network in the Netherlands needs to be adapted over the next ten years. This includes expanding and upgrading large substations, which is a significant task for the grid operator Liander. To tackle this challenge, Liander has enlisted the help of Qirion, a company specializing in energy infrastructure projects. One of the technical project leaders at Qirion is Leroy van Tol. He and his colleagues encountered the problem of limited space at high-voltage locations to create a covered workshop and storage area. Leroy explains, "I was looking for a solution to the small space we sometimes have at high-voltage locations. A workshop container is too small, and a variant hall is too large."

Searching for a Solution

Safety is crucial in high-voltage environments. Leroy also needed a temporary solution as the work is temporary. In his search on the internet, he came across Kroftman. Initially, Kroftman's container shelter was not suitable for this environment. The wind and snow loads were insufficient, and Leroy also needed a rental option, which was not available at Kroftman at the time. Despite his reservations, Leroy contacted Kroftman. "I presented our problem to Kroftman. They responded very positively right away and saw possibilities for collaboration. Kroftman brainstormed and adapted the design of the container shelter to meet our safety requirements. Kroftman also saw the value in a rental construction."

Newly Developed Product by Kroftman

In response to Qirion's request, Kroftman has developed a unique and fully equipped container shelter for rental, featuring:

  1. Extra safety straps in the tarp with dedicated attachment points.
To further enhance safety, Kroftman added extra safety straps in the roof tarp, attached to dedicated points on the container. In case of any issues with the structure, these dedicated attachment points ensure that nothing blows into the distribution station.
  2. Welded attachment points on the containers.
A unique feature of the rental containers is the welded attachment points. No other rental container offers this option. These welded attachment points have been included in the strength calculations.
  3. Welded rain gutters on the containers.
The rental containers feature welded rain gutters, preventing water from entering the covered area.
  4. Flexible layout due to the rail system on the container sidewalls.
Our containers are flexible to configure due to the rail system on the container sidewalls. During an ongoing project, it's easy to install or remove warehouse settings and/or a workbench while the containers remain in place.
  5. Modular addition of extra container shelters.
Attachment points are provided on both sides of our containers, allowing for modular expansion. Think of adding an extra container with a shelter.
  6. Containers with welded grounding points.
The welded grounding point enhances safety and ensures that in the event of a short circuit, the escaping current is directed to the ground.
  7. Roll-up system for the shelter.
The shelter features a practical roll-up system at the front, allowing for easy opening and closing.
  8. A unique electrical installation for the container shelter.
With a certified installation with a 32-amp power supply and a fuse box. Interconnecting the containers is possible. There is a built-in, thermostat-regulated heating system to prevent condensation. There is interior and exterior lighting with a switch on the inside of the container and a 32-amp connection point at the workbench.
  9. Kroftman provides the assembly of the container shelter.
Our technicians bring a tracked aerial work platform themselves. Assembly is done safely, including the tube on the top of the container where technicians can secure themselves. Once our technicians are done, the container shelter is ready for immediate use. We call it Plug and Play.

Solution that fits the requirement

Leroy mentions, "There were quite a few doubts among administrators initially. Two containers with a 'tent' as a shelter. When they heard 'tent,' they didn't immediately think of a sturdy and safe workspace. Especially considering our work with high voltage, concerns about safety must be taken seriously. And we had to demonstrate that the container shelter met safety requirements. Eventually, all stakeholders within the organization agreed to the proposed structure. Even the people on the construction site, often wary of something new, are satisfied." Can we then say that this was the right solution for Qirion? "Absolutely. I now have a solution that fits my needs perfectly," says a satisfied Leroy.

Second container shelter in the making

A second container shelter is currently in the making for Qirion. Leroy says, "We can use this modular container shelter at various high-voltage locations. Generally, we always have a small green area available somewhere. Precisely because it's modular, you can easily expand it. The energy transition is far from over, and we expect to work on more small(er) locations and use this unit more. We currently have it at a high-voltage location, but it's certainly interesting for other companies where safety is also very important, and there is no space for a variant hall."

A successful collaboration

Within Qirion, it has significantly improved the way projects are executed. Leroy says, "From my first contact with Kroftman until we put the container shelter into use, it took over 18 months. This is understandable, given the importance we attach to safety. It was more than worth the time investment. We can now provide more space for our people to do their work well, more frequently. Through the rental construction, we are also using public funds wisely. So, I am very happy that I entered into a collaboration with Kroftman. If I had to describe the collaboration in two words, I would say constructive and powerful."
